Dear Sir
While im reading IP Teminology i found that
"A Byte is 7 or 8 bits, depending on whether parity is used"
What is the meaning of parity?
where it is used?
Thanks and Regards
Krishnan
Parity is a very basic error checker. It is one bit in length, and is used to show if a byte is odd or even. If you have even parity, then if the first 7 bits are even, the parity bit is 1, else the bit is 0. So if a bit gets changed somewhere in the byte, it's parity will change, hence there will be a mismatch with the parity bit. Of course, if 2 bits are changed the parity bit will still be correct, so it is only very basic error detection.
Considering you are new to networking, I would suggest some foundation reading on networking before attempting the CCNA exam. Comptia Network+ is an excellent start to get you familiar with all the terms a student of CCNA should know. It should provide you with a more solid base with which to build your Cisco skills on.

Here's the Comptia website, specifically for Network+
http://certification.comptia.org/network/default.aspx
There are plenty of books written for the exam, have a look on Amazon. Sybex do a good study guide, and Todd has written many himself. The exam code is N10-004.
