Hi there!

I was trying to install the SDM demo as described in chapter 4, Hands-on-lab 4.6 - After installing the SDM and copying the dataFile.zip to c:\ I came to the point of telling SDM where to connect to. I entered 127.0.0.1 and a friendly pop-up told me: (truncated)
Unable to launch SDM due to one or more of the following reasons:
1) invalid IP or no router
2) HTTP/HTTPS disabled
try again if you have fixed these problems - sorry I couldn't manage a screenshot here...

So I had to install a small webserver (analogX SimpleServer:WWW) and point it to drive C:\'s root... (or to the file - both works)
then I had security warnings of Windows Firewall, Windows Defender and Internet Explorer... who blocked local ActiveX, pop-ups and the execution of the JAVA applet.

After passing that (and "learning" several hours about Windows) I finally could start SDM pointing it to 127.0.0.1

In Todd's book it all sounds easier ;)

---
Is it because I use BootCamp? Is it IE7? Or whatever..
maybe this helps some people.

With kind regards,

Andreas

P.S. Todd, if you read this: Thanks for the enthusiasm that you spread in the book!

Ugh...yes, it is BootCamp...I guess I should have mentioned that in my book....especially since I had the same damn issue!

I run a MacBook Pro (17", hi-def, hi-res, 4gig ram...ok, I am just bragging now) LOL!

Anyway's, I have all sorts of issues that I am "praying" that the new version in another week fixes...

I had to load SDM on my XP device, then yes, it was as easy as I wrote! :D

So, wow, sounds like you really know your stuff! I think I'll email you (after then next BootCamp comes out) if I can't get it working still...

Let's talk in another week when Leopard comes out and see how that goes.

Thanks for writing.
Cheers!

I discovered that the latest version of SDM (v. 2.4.1) did NOT work with the SDM demo tool. I downloaded version 2.3.2 of SDM instead, and it worked!

Ryan, who is studying for the CCNA aswell, has found out a bunch of things.
With his permission, I post his findings here for everyone else to use. :)

From my testing it appears that only SDM version 2.3.2 has the capability to load the dataFile.zip off of the local file system. All other versions attempt to post data to the web server requesting the devices capabilities. It never performs a "GET /dataFile.zip HTTP/1.0"

To get SDM to work in demo you must have version 2.3.2

So try this:
1.) Remove your current installed version of SDM (Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs)
2.) If you don't have it already download the SDM demo tool. You can use the following link (CCO login required)
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Software/Tablebuild/doftp.pl?ftpfile=pub/web/sdm/tool/SDM_demo_tool.zip&swtype=FCS
Or
http://ftp-sj.cisco.com/pub/web/sdm/tool/SDM_demo_tool.zip
3.) Open up the zip file and extract dataFile.zip to c:\
4.) Download SDM version 2.3.2.
A.) You can try the following link (CCO login required)
http://ftp-sj.cisco.com/pub/web/sdm/SDM-V232.zip
Or
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Software/Tablebuild/doftp.pl?ftpfile=pub/web/sdm/SDM-V232.zip&swtype=FCS
If the above link does not work
A.) Go to http://www.cisco.com/go/sdm
B.) Login with CCO user/pass
C.) Under the support section (midway down the page on the right) select Download Software
D.) When the device list is shown, scroll down to "Cisco Router and Security Device Manager" (Should be highlighted) You will be asked for your user/pass again.
E.) In the file listing section scroll down till you find SDM-V232.zip
F.) follow the next screens and download and install
5.) Once SDM is started, on the SDM Launcher window where it states Device IP Address or Hostname: enter: 127.0.0.1 and click on Launch
6.) If you have IE7 you will have to keep right mouse clicking (at the top) on the yellow allow ActiveX (allow blocked content) over and over on every IE window.
7.) When the prompt comes up stating "Please enter the device IP address. Enter 127.0.0.1 and click start.
8.) right mouse click the IE windows again to allow ActiveX/blocked content.
9.) the app should now startup with the main SDM page you see in the course book.

Hope this helps,
Ryan

Blackpaw's solution works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It works with both available SDM versions 2.4.1 and 2.3.2... but I have to say this is the strangest error I've seen....

Thanks Blackpaw

Hi all.

I have two solution for SDM 2.5 to work.

First solution: get rid of SDM luncher and use directly the launchTask.html file in the Cisco SDM\common\common folder. The file will ask for the IP address and you can insert the 127.0.0.1 address.

Second solution: download the new SDM version (2.5) and the 2.3.2 version. Extract SDMLauncher.exe from the old version into the Cisco SDM folder (substituting the 2.5 version).

In my PC both solution work.

I have a question: during the initialization of SDM a warning appears saying "SDM has detected enabled debugs on the router ..." and it is suggested to use the CLI to disable the debug. Is it normal? How can I use the CLI if I'm running a demo tool?

Another tip: you can edit using notepad the host.cfg file (in Cisco SDM folder) to add the localhost to be able to select it from the launcher window.

Bye.

Tsunamoro, thanks for the helpful post.

That debug message is normal because the router that cisco used for the demo had debugging running. Just ignore it, that is not a problem.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the tips Tsunamoro. :rolleyes:I think its launcher.html not launchTask.html because the launchTask.html file don't ask for any ip address.

Hi,

I have tried all the suggestions on this thread but when I enter "127.0.0.1" and hit the Start button I can see a new window appear but it only stays for an instant and then it disappears. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

Hi
While trying to get the software, it says that it requires CCO information. I have the Cisco websiye username login and password. Will that suffice?

yes, it should work. If not create a login by going to www.cisco.com and click on Register in the top-right corner.

Hi,

I have installed the SDM Demo on my laptop and one of my desktops. I've turned off popups and told it to allow activeX. When I open SDM, for 127.0.0.1, all seems good until it sits there at the SDM Launch Page. It says to wait and not close the window. Then it just sits there saying that a seperate window will open in another window. Anyone have any ideas what is happening?

Thanks,

Pat

Hi all,
I have the same problem and I do not know how to solve it, the page after you are getting permitted to use the SDM stopped and I have waited too long in case if it takes time to enter to the SDM webpage.
I would be most grateful if you could provide a response.

Kind Regards,
Sinan

P.S, Todd , can you please reply to the problem above as I saw a lot of SDM problems in the Forum and no sensable reponses to them. Much appreciate.

The problem I had with SDM is when my Java updated. I had to down grade my Java to get it working. Weird.
I wish there were some simple answers, but there is not.

Just some advise. If you are studying for you CCNA, don't spend so much time on it right now. When you get to CCNP, CCSP, and CCVP, you have to be able to do SDM, but the objective is smaller wtih CCNA.

I have SDM working, in demo mode, on XP with IE6, not IE7.

Cheers!

Dear Todd,
I am grateful for your prompt reply. I appreciate that so much.
and in response to your mail, Yes I am preparing for CCNA examination, I bought netsim 6 and I am studying the course using your GREAT book...
I will try to download IE6 today to see whether it solve the issue or not...

Just last quick one for you... why do I have to choose the loopback IP address when I need to work in SDM (enter 127.0.0.1 in the SDM GUI window)?

Thanks a million.
Your's Sincerely.

Well, the SDM demo is great when it is set up and working, it is just really hard to set up.
Cisco doesn't really want you to use it, I think. They want you to buy a router and use it to connect to a real router, which always works! :)
the 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address of your machine and when you type that in you are saying to use the SDM database files on your computer.
cheers!

Hi Todd
You have put my soul to rest for eternity. I had already, decided to ignore the SDM part, because I went through Chapter 4 thoroughly and no where it is said that SDM is an objective for the CCNA exam. Also, in the CISCO site, it is also not mentioned.

I decided previously, and also lately suggested by you, that I would concentrate on the commands and for VPN configuration and Access List. Atleast, with the Commands, there is a way out, but with more jobwork than what would be using SDM

hi,
I just wanna ask Todd that whether in CCNA current exams there are questions based on configuration of router(or anything) using SDM  . Also tell the type of questions one can expect on SDM in 640-802.

Thanks Todd, Blackpaw (and your friend Ryan), and BeanCurd!!!

The SDM demo is now working with the loopback address, and I hope with my 2611XM router, too. Success!! SDM v2.3.2 is working with the latest IE8 and JAVA6 update 15 (build 1.6.0_15-b03) on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop running Windows XP SP3. However, it took me a couple of days to get it going.

I started with IE7 and JAVA6 update 13 (build 1.6.0_13-b03) and installed SDM v2.5 and the demo. After reading another forum's posts, I tried to downgrade to JAVA6 update 6 without success, and then JAVA2 and that didn't work either. Next, I tried to turn off the add-ons because everytime I looked at the JAVA console, it said I had version JAVA6 update 13...frustrating. Then, I decided to upgrade to IE8, you guessed it...that didn't work. I finally found this thread and thanks to you all, I downgraded to SDM v2.3.2 and then updated to JAVA6 update 15, and IT WORKS!!!! WOOHOO! I think I drove my wife crazy as I did nothing but troubleshoot this all Friday night.

Thanks again to all of your posts!!!

Jimmy

Hi,

I just joined the forum. I also have a problem with the SDM V2.5. I don't have a router to work with but the version I downloaded keeps saying a dataFile is missing. How do I get the other version?

Thanks.

Hi,
I'm using a mac as well and I get the same two errors when trying to start SDM from my Parrallels XP side. Could you please give me some details on how I could install the web server needed and bypass by errors?

Thanks a lot!

Catherine, can I ask why you are installing SDM?
Is it to study for the exam? If so, don't.
Cisco took it off all objectives and did an "end of life" (EOL) on the product.
I have removed it from my new book that I am working on.

If you are trying to do it because you want to use it at work, then I'd suggest lowering the Java version. That is 99% of the problem. It doesn't work with the latest Java releases.

Cheers!

Hi Todd
Just to check that I did not mis-understood you. You are saying that for the 640802 exam, we do not need the SDM any more. Is it so? Also, had there been any major change in the objectives, i mean inclusion any topic that is not available in your 2008 edition?

Thanks
