View Full Version : Can My Two Routers Talk?

Here's a silly question:

I have a 1720 router with a T1 interface, and RJ-45 connector.
I also have an old MC3810 router with a serial interface.

I have a cable for the MC3810 that has a large, square connector on the other end - I think it went to a frame relay device.

Since the two interfaces both show up as serial devices, is there any way I could butcher the cable from the 3810, ohm out the pins I need, and splice them to an RJ-45 cable, and make these two routers talk in the lab?

I'm guessing the answer is no... but just thought I ask. :-)

Thanks,

Tony

I do not believe you can connect a serial cable to a T1 interface's RJ-45 port. The RJ45 interface on a T1 module goes to the phone company. You need to get a Wic 1T or wic 2T for your 1720 to do serial.

With that being said, I do not know the pin out on cisco or mc3810 serial interfaces. I do know that cisco cables ends are either dce or dte. If I find a page with the pinouts I will let you know.

Hi Don:
Thanks for the info.
Yeah, I didn't think it would work.

But if you find the pinouts, let me know. That could certainly come in handy someday.

Take care,
Tony

Cable specifications for all the cisco cables are here;

If you want a painless solution, get 25 feet of crossover cable from one of the ports on the wired router to the internet port of the other. Like lenny said all you need to do is make sure the routers have different IPs.

Unfortunately, this solution would not work. OP had 2 DIFFERENT types of serial interfaces. He would need to have the same interface type on each router.
