Hello Todd,

I have a quick question. I built my own rolled-cable out of a cat5e from bestbuy. Im using Macbook, Mac OS X which does not have any serial port. On Chapter 1 of your book, you stated that you only need to plugin the rolled cable to the console port of the router, and then connect to it via HyperTerminal on COM1. I have no idea how to do this on Mac OS X. Do I need an additional RJ45-to-DB9 adapter in order to successfully console to the router? Can I just plug it in on the ethernet port?

No, you cannot connect your rolled cable to an ethernet port.
This is a problem for many people now because most new laptops do not have com ports. I have a MacBook Pro myself. However, I also had to get a Hell, err...Dell older laptop with a com port for this purpose and other things I needed.

However, you are not out of luck. They make USB to com connection cables. You can get them at Fry's, CompUSA, etc, or find one on google....
Just make sure they have the drivers for OSX..

Cheers!

Hello,
I found this in a German Mac magazine.

Start a terminal and type:

screen /dev/cu.usbserial 9600
To end screen type CTRL-a, CTRL-k and y!
Bye, Tore
