hi,
i want to know what CDP is used for exactly. i know that it collects the information about the directly connected cisco devices. does it gather info about the remote devices also? could you please also let me know the other uses of CDP?

page 283 in ccna 640-802 by Todd Lammle said that "CDP is a protocol designed to help administrators collect information about both locally attached and remoter devices...." but i am not sure if it is used for remote devices also.

Here is what my book says:

Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is a proprietary protocol designed by Cisco to help administrators collect information about both locally attached and remote devices. By using CDP, you can gather hardware and protocol information about neighbor devices, which is useful info for troubleshooting and documenting the network.

And I am 100% accurate. As you read further into the chapter you'll see where I discuss how to get information about locally attached routers and remote devices using CDP. I spend quite a few pages on this.

Cheers!
Todd Lammle

CDP is Cisco's version of IEEE 802.1ab LLDP - Link Layer Discovery Protocol.

Even CDP can be used for routing in hub and spoke topology called On-demand routing
Router(config)# router odr (on hub)
