Hi guys, I'm trying to set up a Back-to-Back lab but I'm having issues with my Serial 4A/S interface from one of the two Routers I'm using, one is a 2600 series and a 2500, the serial interface from the 2600 series that I'm using keeps dropping and coming back up - any suggestions why this is happening? :(

Can you post the output of 'show controller' for the two interfaces. Maybe there's some sort of mismatch in what each is expecting. (I'm a newbie drawing at straws!)
Maybe one of your serial ports has just gone wonky. ;)
Nothing is UNKNOWN in your previous output:

The outputs look fine (other than the up/down), so you can only have a bad interface or bad cable. I don't know of third problem that can be causing this.

Hello,
could you upgrade the DTE 2610 to IOS c2600-i-mz.123-19a.bin?
I'm always skeptical when you can't download a IOS file from the Cisco Feature Navigator. You can't download Version 19 but you can download version 19a.
By the way, you can check the cable with the 2500 router (I presume it has two serial interfaces). Don't forget to make sure that you plugin the cable correct and not upside down.

Hello,
even if you updated it an hour ago: If Cisco says that you can't download it anymore or that they added security advisories I wouldn't use it anymore. I did a downgrade on my 3640 routers a few weeks ago as the IOS I used had security advisories.
Could you find a way to check the cables without the NM-4A/S that is in question? Do you use crossover cables (with only a plug at each end) or did you plug a female and male cable togethter (with two DB-15 connectors in the middle)? I use cable clips to secure the DB-15 connections.
One of the problems of troubleshooting is to make sure that something is in order so you can use it for testing. As long as you are not sure that the cable is working without problems you can't use it for further tests. And if every cable you try to use makes problems you must question the ports or the config you use for testing!

the difference? Better handling as the crossover cable is shorter and you don't have the DB-15 connection that could fail.

Hello,
so back to the assumption that the NM-4A/S module is broken.
Could you try to use two of the S0/x ports on this router?
I don't understand your problem with the booting message. Could you explain what bothers you?
Bye, Tore

crissa the booting messege does not bother me at all, is just that I don't know if that is affecting my ports some how just wondering now I have three 2600 series routers and a 2500 only one of the 2600 have the smart serial wic card with a dsu/csu wic card I could also use the T1 dsu/csu with a crossover RJ48 cable but again is the only one with this wic cards, the other two only have the NM-4A/S wics, this is why I need this NM-4A/S working.
What I don't understand is that this routers are form 3 different vendors I can believe this wic cards came bad from this 3 different places, could it be a corrupted image?

Hello,
could you do a "show version" and post the outcome, please? Maybe it is a good idea to give each router a hostname and to add the prompt (with the hostname) to the outcome.
I already wrote something about one of the IOS version. Maybe this (third) router also has an outdated IOS. (The processor id is new to me ... ;-)
By the way, I tried to get a boot message like the one you posted. But my four 2500 routers and my four 3640 routers didn't show one. I know this boot message, I already saw one. But where (at home or at work) and with which model? I can't remember!

Hello,
could you try "c2600-ipbasek9-mz.124-23b.bin", please? It is only IP BASE but it should do the job.
I couldn't download the version you are using at the moment ...
Try <http://www.cisco.com/go/cfn/>.
You have three 26xx routers and two of them use IOS version that, hm, are a little bit interesting. Maybe you should change the IOS. :-)
By the way:
Maybe you could ask your buddy to bring the module and the router.
Just an idea! ;-)

I don't have a CCO account to download c2600-ipbasek9-mz.124-23b.bin, is there a command that I could use to debug the communication between this two ports DCE/DTE ???
and yes I'm waiting for this guy to come by and drop me his wic card and router to test them

Hello,
I can't help you about the CCO account.
But maybe you can do some "copy flash: tftp:" practise. As long as the router has enough DRAM and Flash you can use the IOS from another router (if they are the same type). You can check with <http://www.cisco.com/fo/cfn/> what are the memory requirements of an IOS.

a friend of mine will be coming with his 2600 to check my cards and router, it would be nice to put my routers in loopback mode just for testing purposes I'm guiding my self/learning from this site http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk713/tk628/technologies_tech_note09186a00800a754b.shtml now I have a back-to-back set up I don't use the CSU/DSU I don't know if this procedures are ok when using just the serial ports and not the csu/dsu ???

Seems like everyone else gave up on me :( except Crissa, Well I have good news guys after all the troubleshooting and the time that I spent with this serial ports going up/down on me, I have found the solution.........two bad NM-4A/S Serial Wic Cards that were sold to me on ebay GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR , I decided to buy a new one and guess what guys? It WORK !!! Can't believe it. I will post close ups of the 2 Cards and the new one I just got, there is something on this boards that might help future buyers of this Serial Cards identify if it could be bad or not anyway just for you guys to take a look at.
I thank you all for your time and help, I really appreciated

12-10-2010, 01:16 AM
Hello,
I'm sorry to read that, after all the testing, our assumption came true that the cards are the problem. If you only change the card (with the one from your friend) and all other things (like routers, IOS versions, configs and cables) are unchanged the solutions is easy => broken card.
As far as I know at work we only buy from Cisco. Or reuse equipment that comes back from a customer. If it doesn't work, get the next one. For me it is very uncommon to see broken cards or spend so much time for troubleshooting. My hope was all the time that the cards are OK and we missed to check for all problems that could occur.
Good luck with your next cards! :-)
Bye, Tore

So... See, I had run out of ideas. Glad to see I was right though in my initial analysis back up at post #30... Wonky WICs! ;)
I've had good luck buying used stuff from http://www.cablesandkits.com/cisco-network-equipment-c-50.html .
Glad you got it sorted out. :)
