View Full Version : CCNP - all change?

I was hoping to start self study for the CCNP, and had thought the Foundation Learning Guides looked the way to go. However, I have heard that the syllabus is changing. Can anyone confirm this? Might new CP books appear?
My work have agreed to fund the purchase of one set of books, eg. the FLG's, but not more than one series, so I can't get the official study guide as well for example, so I have to decide what to do. I must also buy them before the end of this financial year, which is a complication if they are due to release updated FLGs. I wonder how different they would be?
They have agreed to do this on the back of passing my CCNA. I went on one of those intensive courses for 5 days having never seen a router before. Spent the couple of weekends before reading the Lammle book in the evenings, which gave me a great start. I want to capitalise on my work's current generosity before the effect on them of my success wears off!
Any advice gratefully received.

Which hardware components should you have in your home lab to prepare for this CCNP . . . ?

You can use routers such as the 2600XM, 3640 or if you can 1800. Swiches you need a L3 like a 3550 (two if possible) and a L2.

Not for CCNP, no.
They lie, period.
For CCNA, yes.
Those routers cannot run the latest enterprise 12.4, which you need for the IPv6 labs.
I love the part on that side where it says you get a "FREE" power supply! Woo hoo! I didn't know the power supplies were seperate for their 2600 routers.
They are wrong and do not buy from them...period.

I would have four routers, three swiches (two L3, one L2).
That 3640 is ok, personally i would get the 2600XM as they are cheaper all round (cards, power etc).
I have four 2600XM with 128RAM 32Flash and use IOS c2600-adventerprisek9-mz.124-10a.bin, this covers the lot. The only thing i cannot do is MPLS, but then i roll back to a 12.3 IOS. I also use two 2501, these baby's are cheap as chips and serve great as a backbone/core for injecting BGP, EIGRP etc.

I would just need the cabling right . . . ?
the 3640 units seem cheaper than the 2600xm's and seem more plentiful.
Also, which exam do you start to prepare for . . .routing or switching . . . ?
I remember you saying something about audio as well . . .which audio training product do you like . . .?
Thaanks again . . !

Hello,
keep in mind that a 3640 is "naked". As long as you don't add network cards it has only a console and a aux port. No ethernet, no serial, nothing. On the other hand, it seems to be easier to find network cards than to find flash or ram for this router. Most of the time you should prefer a router with full flash and ram.
A 26..XM router has at least one fixed Fastethernet interface.

Tore is right the 3640 is bare most of the time, but wic etc are cheap now anyway, as long as the DRAM/Flash has been done you are fine.
Then yes you just need the cables.
Which exam to start with suit you better? Most start with the route one, then the switch.
There is a few vendors for audio, but i really like the INE stuff as they never say "look at example x" like some do. It is pure listening, learning.
