Todd,

I'm curious which wireless interface you were using in the R3 router (2811). Was it an HWIC-AP-G-A? If not, I'm assuming that one would still work for this though, right? And if I get one and get it working in my 2811, will a computer with any old Linksys 802.11g adapter be able to talk to it? It doesn't have to be a specific Cisco wirless adapater I hope.

I'm not at my home lab right now, so I'm going through this part of Chapter 8 with Packet Tracer, but Packet Tracer just doesn't cut it with wireless.

Thanks...

that was just a wireless WIC card, you can use any wireless router.
I also had an 871W Wireless router, but again, anything Cisco will work in place.
I also can set this up in Packet Tracer without a problem.
thanks for writing.

Ok, here's the deal. In Packet Tracer I have the network in Figure 8.9 setup.

Configuring the dot11radio in R3 (Page 369), I get to the part that says:

R3(config-if)#ssid ADMIN

But then the next output is some 'link changes" and some 'updown' messages and then it returns to:

R3(config-if)#

In the configuration text on page 369 it shows that the prompt should have changed to:

R3(config-if-ssid)#

That doesn't happen and so I can't type in the next few commands:

guest-mode
authentication open
infrastructure-ssid

The Packet Tracer R3 is a 2811 with a HWIC-AP-AG-B. I can't get the wireless PC to even see the ADMIN ssid via its Linksys setup app, due to the fact, I assume, that I can't type in the 3 commands above.

I'm hoping that the real HWIC-AP-G-A that I've ordered will allow me to type in those additional commands when installed in a real 2811.

There are no other wireless Access Points or routers involved (and I don't have.) So, to match the network in Figure 8.9, I'll put the HWIC-AP-G-A into the real 2811 and then try to set up the Figure 8.9 Lab and access that from a computer that will have a real Linksys USB wireless G adapater.

Seems reasonable, eh?

Update: Well, I got the Packet Tracer wireless PC to talk to the R3 router. On the Linksys 'Connect' tab, associated with the PC, there is no 'Wireless Network Name', but I clicked on 'Connect' anyway and it established a pingable connection. Sneaky.... ;)

But, the (config-if-ssid) prompt shown on page 369 is still not available. And so those 3 additional commands cannot be entered. I still hope that I can recreate this and type all of the commands when I get the real HWIC-AP-G-A that I've ordered.

This part of the book is about IP routing, not wireless, so this is just a little side step while creating that network in Figure 8.9.

Oh, and I put this in the CCNA Equipment thread, because it was intially about the HWIC card.

COOL BEANS! ...as they say. :D

I got my HWIC-AP-G-A today with 2 antennas. Put it in one of my 1841's. Set it up with the basic commands in Ch. 8 for the R3 router. Set up the dhcp. Created a new profile on one of my wireless equipped computers.

Voila... connected. Took about 5 - 10 minutes.

Oh, and in the box from cablesandkits was a nice ink pen, a little note pad, and... a little bag of M&M's! :D

Router#The 2811 doesn't even see that the module is installed. I'm trying to google it up to see if the 2811's IOS needs to be updated. No luck so far, but still looking.

I tried it in 2 different HWIC slots in the 2811 also, slot HWIC0 (bottom right) and slot HWIC3 (top left).

Although the Cisco.com www show all K9 IOS versions support the HWIC-AP-G-A, you must still use the T-train versions.

Try that mate. lmk how it is.

Yeah, I went down to the Vets Hall for a beer(s) and cigar, a nice Gurkha Triple Ligero, and then came back and found this:

For those who are working on Chap 8 & 9 - 7th edition, the topology depicted on page 359 has a Mobile User wirelessly connected to R3. I created that topology in Packet Tracer to do the configs for both chapters. I tried using the commands from the book, it didn't work very well in PT (5.3.2). After some research, I got it working, here's how I did it -

That is fantastic! I used real routers/switches to write my book which is why there are some commands that Packet Tracer does not cover.
Thank you for sharing this!!
