Protocol down

Hello,
I followed the Sybex Virtual Lab from the book and I still couldn't get the protocol line status up. I enable 'no shutdown', and the line status is up. I configured both a static route and dynamic route, but each router has each serial IP address as protocol down. The fast ethernet interfaces (f0/0 etc) are protocol up though. Is it just the software?

There isn't too many things to check.

If you have back to back routers with a serail crossover cable, the IP address is irrelevant at this point. And the routing protocol only comes into play when you start adding networks to each routers.

you need to make sure both interfaces are enabled and the DCE end has the clock rate command set.

IF line protocol up, make sure both devices have the same encapsulation method, and same "time to keep"
