What cable type?

Troubleshoot layer 1 first, if the cable ben use is Ethernet straight through check with a crossover

I reckon cable must be a crossover as I don't think these switched have autodetect on the ports. Does anyone know if you can trunk over 10MB ports ? I know you can't use 10MB for 'Router on a Stick' but I'm not sure about trunking between switches.

Get rid of the 2924 or anything below a 2950 if you're using it for studying, you're just hurting yourself. Use them for home use to connect devices, but not for studies.

Yes, you need a crossover, and no you cannot trunk on 10Mbps links, or router on a stick, as you said.
