pick up a new computer the other day and it looks like i'm going to have to get a serial to usb console cable.

should i get the actual console cable or just a simple serial to usb adapter?

I have the USB to serial - there is tons of makes. Just watch your OS as some do not work so well with USB to serial.

I have on of these adapters/cables:

I also have a 'cable only' like that from Cables To Go. I'll test them tonight to make sure they work with Windows 7.

I use the cables to go usb to serial 9, works great with win 7 64 bit enterprise edition. Probably works fine with all the other win 7 64 flavors as well.

Sorry I didn't get to this last night, but I just verified that both of these adapters work with Windows 7 64bit.

elphrank0, is this the one you have, Model 26886?

I like the Cables Unlimited model since you can omit the cable if you want to. And, if you need a longer cable for some reason, you can use that too.

(And isn't PuTTY a great little program?)

And yes, I clean that front fan filter on a regular basis!
