View Full Version : Serial interfaces are no coming up on Cisco router 2501?
Hi
Im trying to to set up cisco routers (2500 series) for CCNA studies but due to some reasons the serial interface s0/s1 are not coming up.
Before assigning ip address ,clockrate at DCE interface and no shutdown commands the show interface command says the following:
Serial0 is administratively down, line protocol is down
Hardware is HD64570......
And after ip address, clockrate,no shutdown command ,
show interface reads like
Serial0 is down, line protocol is down........
show controller command does not show the type (DTE or DCE) interface.(as it shows in simulator)
I changed the cables changed the routers (I have four) , reload the routers, even set back every thing to factory default settings but nothing works.
One thing I noticed that the led were off on all serial interfaces on all four routers but ethernet leds were flickering and ok led nect to AUX port is on , on all four routers
I managed to configure the routers , completely in the simulator but not with real hardware
Your professional advice/help would be highly appericiated.
Thanks
Its my first time in any forum so please excuse and correct me if any rule were not followed properly

Hello,
do not double post ... ;-) Usually one posting is enough, as people like me who are willing to help read the whole forum. And if these people have no idea to solve your problem a second posting doesn't help.
Did you already checked the cables? One common problem is to plug in the serial connectors upside down. Did you try to configure HDLC or PPP on both sides?
As you are able to configure a serial connection in a simulator with success there is maybe only a problem on the physical laver (layer 1).
I own two 2516 and one 2504 router so I can check the output on my routers if you need further assistance.

Tore is right. It is either a bad interface, clocking is not working or your cable is bad.
Todd
Hi Tore
I cannot express my gratitude in words about the help I got from you, and it may not seem to you as big help as it is to me , because I spent hours struggling on that. Thanks a lot
It was the serial connectors which I was putting upside down because I was thinking that if I am not putting right it will not go in, like the most PC connectors, which clearly wasn't the case.
I post it twice because first time I post at the wrong place (announcements) but thanks for pointing this out.
Thanks to you Todd as well who agreed with Tore and here I cannot stop my self to praise your book I read and its because I been through the books of three different authors ........you are way ahead from all of them.
I need some suggestions from you and I dont know weather its the right place or not and if not please correct me and I would post the question at the right place next time
I studied your book CCNA Study Guide 5th edition for exam 640-801 , now as the Cisco changed the exams and course, do I need to study a lot more to pass the new CCNA exam or is it only 10/15 percent more than the old course.
Your kind recommendation is required about your new book for the new exam , I found one at Amazon(UK)which is Deluxe Edition ,completely updated for new exam ,Includes CCNA Virtual Lab Platinum Edition, 5th Edition 640-682.
The included Virtual Lab(simulator) is fully working or do I have to buy Licence/key for full version ?
Or the sixth edition which is shown at your web site is with updates and better ?
I have four routers (three 2501 and one 2514) do I need any other for CCNA Lab ?
Which switch would be good enough for both CCNA and CCNP as planning to do CCNP as well?
Did your company offer any courses in London (UK)?
Would be very grateful for you kind suggestions
Thanks in advance
King Regards
Mian

Hello,
no problem, my help was only an educated guess. ;-)
I didn't had this problem myself yet and I hope that some labels on the connectors will help me to stay away from it.

Mian, I JUST flew in from the UK today.
I'll be back to teach in the UK this fall.
I was in Glasgow, Birmingham and London.
Where are you, or where you would be willing to go to take the class?
Cheers!

Hi Todd
Thanks for your reply.
I read somewhere at the site that you were visiting UK, Birmingham ,but London wasn't mention , anyways I live in London and if your visit is confirmed please inform me about the dates etc.
I would appreciate if you or any one around please tell me whats wrong with the Lancast Micro transceiver (4320-12) when the RX and PWR leds are on ,TX lead is flashing every 10 seconds.
POL, Link, COL and Jab leds are off and
sh inteface command says
Ethernet0 is up line protocol down
When I put the another Lancast Micro transceiver (4320-11) at the same AUI interface of 2500 router, it works fine and its POL and PWR leds are on , TX is flashing every ten seconds.
Link ,COL and RX leads are off
and sh interface command says
Ethernet0 is up Line protocol is up

Yes, I just returned from London today actually.
I'll be back in the Fall. Would you be interested in attending a CCNA 5-day bootcamp? It isn't free, but I will be teaching one and wanted to start a list.
I'll do Glasgow, Birmingham and London, plus other countries.
Anyway's, make sure the hearbeat switch is "OFF" on your transciever...
Let me know if that helps.
cheers!

Hi Todd,
Thank you for your prompt response.
I have been through three diffrent CCNA books extensively including your fifth edition , but unfortunately cisco changed the course and exams and today I received your latest 6th edition and looking at its contents much of it is the same if not all.
After working at simulator, at present Im practicing at real hardware and hope to take and pass he exam soon.
Just in case I did not take/succeed in exam I would love to attend the camp and I would be grateful if you please tell me the last date of reservation.
And even if I pass before that I would love to see you in person and it would be an honour because I belive(from my past experience) that there are lots of people in this world with great knowledge of diffreent subjects but only few who are really good authors and teachers having the precious skills and techniques to convey the knowledge to others and you one of them.
There is no "heartbeat" switch on the transceiver (Lancast 4320-12).
The only switch is SQE which I ve already tried by turning on and off.
Is there anyway to troubleshoot the tranceiver?
kind Regards

The heartbeat is an old Ethernet protocol that is not used any longer, and yes, the SQE button is what turns it on and off. Leave it off.
If however, you still dont' get your line up, verify your ethernet cable and the hub/switch connection, then replace your tranceiver.
The new 6th edition is more the 60% new from the 5th edition, if not more. HUGE changes in every chapter.
Read them carefully.
You can attend any of my classes by looking at www.globalnettraining.com (http://www.globalnettraining.com).
Cheers!

Hi Todd
Thanks for you prompt reply and for the info about the bootcamp.
I am preparing for CCNA since one year and read books of three different authors extensively and found your book The Best .
Unfortunately Cisco has changed the course and exams and yesterday I received the latest 6th edition of your book for new exam and I think I do not need to study a lot more to cover the new topics.
The plan is to pass well before Fall and if not then I will love to join and it would be very useful if you please inform the last date of registration/reservation.
And even if pass the exams before fall, I would come to see you which would be an honour.
There is no heartbeat switch on the transceicer , the only switch on all the four trnsceivers I have , is SQE which I have tried already.
Kind Regards
