I will take CCNA soon and it should be fine.
So I searched for CCNA books:

(1) Publisher: Cisco Press; 1 edition (March 5, 2010)
http://www.amazon.com/Routing-Switching-Official-Certification-Library/dp/1587202247/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312303684&sr=8-1

(2) Publisher: Sybex; 1 edition (May 11, 2009)
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0470383607?tag=httpwwwglob05-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=0470383607&adid=1DPBGKSRJ4069VHG9JNY&

Which one should I go for? I like Sybex book (I guess it is easier to read) but this book states: "May 11, 2009". If I read Sybex book, will I be able to pass current CCNP exams?
Thanks.

You could use those - the meat and potatoes of the CCNP has not much changed. EIGRP is still EIGRP etc.

The current books are.

CCNP ROUTE 642-902 Official Certification Guide
CCNP SWITCH 642-813 Official Certification Guide
CCNP TSHOOT 642-832 Official Certification Guide

Plus there is the lab guides etc.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but after nearly acing CCNA (985/1000) I have decided to go onto CCNP, starting with ROUTE.

As with CCNA I will be teaching myself, but as I work in an environment I am exposed to this sort of thing everyday so its not as daunting as it sounds.

What are all the recommended texts, guides etc that people recommend I should get? Im looking for sort of a total list of study material I should get to cover all of SWITCH, ROUTE and TSHOOT. On that note, CCNA was easy enough to pass with the help of packet tracer, but I sense I will need to being a lab of my own for CCNP. Can anyone recommend what routers and switches I should set up a lab with? I should be able to pick up some used goodies through work, but an unsure on which switches and routers would be best.

Cheers:)

Hello mate -

The three books i listed above will serve you right from start to finish.
If you like the video to go along with the books Cisco do them as do a number of 3rd party vendors like CBT Nuggets, INE etc. For hardware you would need at least four routers that can run 12.4 IOS and at least three switches two of which being L3.

We have been talking over them here this last week - which may help you.

http://www.lammle.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=2388&highlight=3745

But to give you a quick over view you would need something like -

3 x 26xxXM (128/32) - 2611XM is better
1 x 1841/2801/2811 - any would be good

2 x 3560 or 3550 if you can spend that much
1 x 2960 or 2950 if you can spend that much

HTH.

Just to add somethingt to what Evil said:

If you need books I heard soon Todd may have a CCNP Route book out but until then what I do is the following:

http://www.safaribooksonline.com/

Safari has all the books online all the Cisco Press, all the books the CBT Nuggets guys use. This even has Mr Lammel books on there but to tell you the truth I buy Todds books in Kendel format just to have copy of them on my IPAD and home computer as I like them and Todds style.

Also you can get the free trial version to start but If you go buy:

http://www.ciscopress.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=1587203189

when you buy that video set and flash cards they give you a free trial to safari for 1 month and after that you can get unlimitted books and videos for 29.99 a month for 1 year.

I did that and my Java programmign school book was on there as well for my programming class at college. which saved me another 99.00 bucks.

I got the cert kit for route, switch, and trouble shooting and they had special 50% off at the time so they only costed me 23.00 apiece or somethign like that. I am not sure the fourth july special is still going but getting that safari for a year is pretty awesome, and you might check into that.

Respectfully,

Brian
