Data link layer and Physical layer

Hi Mr Todd Lammle,

I am a bit confused between the Frame(Data Link Layer) <-> Digital Signal(Physical Layer) at Pg44 of CCNA Study Guide,6th Edition.

Frame, which is 1,0's in Digits, convert to Digital Signal(Physical Layer), should be considered as encoding or decoding?

When the sender is sending data in that case the frame will be coded in to a suitable physical layer format using bipolar coding or B8ZS coding, at the receiver the same will be decoded in to 1 and 0.

so both coding and decoding are occur in the same physical layer.
