In reading Chapter 11, I understand the virtues of using PAT especially in large corporations to provide the employees access to the internet without each client having it's own public ip address. The part I am not quite understanding is....if a single public ip address is being used for PAT, how are all the clients behind the company network participating on the internet if they each don't have a unique public ip address? I'm guessing is has something to do with ip ports as the differentiating factor but those ports don't show up in a displayed ip address.

Based on your post, you need to re-read this chapter. The basic fundemental understanding of the differences between NAT and PAT are so critical that you could probably fail the CCNA exam without this understanding. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exageration, but it is very, very important.

PAT used Port numbers at the Transport layer to differenciate between session on the NAT router.
