I have been given the assignment to rack mount a bunch of Cat6509s preloaded with blades and patch the cables up. Each chassis weighs over 200 lbs. Does anyone have any experience with rack mounting the Cat 6509s? How many people would be required for the job? approx. amount of time required per unit?

Thanks.

boy I hope you are buff. those things take two people to install empty.

my suggestion is that if you can't take the blades and the power supplies out and rack it empty then at least remove the power supplies!!

and don't rack it all by your self!!! you could damage the switch by dropping it or even seriously hurt yourself. You don't want to loose a toe!

also if they are going in a two post rack the bring a screw gun to help with the screws. a hand powered screw drive will not cut it. oh it will work but take just as long.

good luck

Timmyz is right - take out the power supplies! We had some with no PSs and it took 3 people. Since these are over 50K, buying a 100 screw gun should be a worthwile investment if you don't already have one.

Ironically the room was not finished, so by the time they finished sanding and painting the datacenter we had to remove most of the gbics and blow them out with cans of air...good luck!
