There isn't a general area on this forum so I'm entering this here. Can anyone assist me with my exam technique when taking the CCNA? I initially sat the 640-801 test and only made it to question 46 out of 57 before the time ran out. I got stuck with the simulations - I can't remember all the IP addresses etc. shown in the "topology" and get so frustrated with switching back and forth from the "show" "hide" topology that I end up loosing the plot! I know the stuff, I can't learn anymore and am ready to throw in the towel.

Yesterday I sat the ICND 640-811 exam, thinking that if I broke my CCNA conquest into two parts it may give me more time to finish the questions. I really had to rush through the easy stuff, barely reading the multi-choice ones but still I got panicked on the simulations. I finished the questions with 30 seconds to spare and came out with 837 which meant another fail!

What's with those plastic boards they give you for the exam? I thought of copying the topology to the board before starting the simulation so that I don't have to click the "show" "hide" topology all the time but it is imposibble to write quickly using a black smudgy marker and one piece of plastic! How frustrating when you leave the cap off the pen they give you for more than 5 seconds the pen won't write either, and you have to lick it to get some moisture back into the tip!!!

I'm not looking for answers to the questions here, that is highly illegal based on the license agreement you accept with Cisco when starting the exam, all I need to know is how on earth is it possible to finish on time???

I must take this oportunity to say a huge thank you to Mr Lammle and other people like him who put such comprehensive study material together. Without your style of writing I would not even attempt the exam.

Well if nothing else this forum has at least given me a chance to vent my frustration - thank you.

Call the exam center ahead of time and ask them if you can have a paper and pencil. The place I went allowed me to have 3 pieces of paper and a pencil - but only if I asked for them. I used them to quickly write out multiples of 16 and other subnetting hints that I could refer to. The Cisco people enourage this but they mentioned writing out notes during the tutorial, which according to the paper I signed is not allowed. It states that you can not use your writing materials until the test begins.

partial example of one of my notes that gives me hints for class C and class B subnetting:

0 16 32 48 64 80 96 112 128 144 160 176 192 208 224 240 256

128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
/25 /26 /27 /28 /29 /30
/17 /18 /19 /20 /21 /22 /23 /24
.128 .192 .224 .240 .248 .252 .254 .255For block sizes of 4 or 8, just read between the lines of the multiples of 16.
