Default Perhaps a bit of confusion....

    Hello.

I am doing a self study and everything I have seen has made complete sense until I found
    Pages 59 and 60.....

We go from the cable types being explained to a page saying do this and that on something called hyperterminal.. .. why does it jump like this? What did I miss?

After the pictures and random instructions it goes to figures2.9 and 2.10 which say that they refer to questions #1 and #2.... what am I missing? What questions are these referring to?

Ok so I see that the questions are from page 59.

But what about the hyperterminal stuff? Should I be doing this?

...only if you want to configure your routers and switches...

Hyperterminal is a terminal emulation program (there are others, I recommend terraterm)
and its how you configure a router/switch out of the box, and in other random situations.

Packet Tracer only simulates hyperterminal, terraterm, whatever...they all look and act pretty much the same. They faciliate the serial connection from your computer directly to your routers console port.

Very important...you need to know how to do it and how to set the terminal emulation program with the right settings.

As Kevin points out this will make much more sense once you have in your possession an actual, physical Cisco router. At that point all you will have is a box and you'll quickly start to think "how do I talk to this box?".

That being said, pgs 59 & 60 might be better placed in Chapter 6.

Thanks a lot guys. I am in the process of getting windows back on my machine and hoping I can get my hands on a router so that I will be able to do this along with the book. I only have 3 weeks until the test!!!! As silly as that sounds given the question I just had to ask...... lol
