Default stuck on loading SDM

Hello everyone

I am trying to use the SDM routerlessdemo installed on my pc.

I installed SDM 2.3.2 and the SDM demo. I have followed instructions from this post here: hxxp://www.lammle.com/discussion/archive/index.php/t-155.html

and using this document:

Extract the zip file SDM_demo_tool.zip.

Copy the 'dataFile.zip' to C:\

Have latest SDM2.3.2 build installed in your PC. If you do not have the SDM2.3.2 installed, you could get the build from the location hxxp://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/sdm
Disable any active pop-up blockers in the web browser that you will use to run SDM.

When SDM is installed on a PC , Internet Explorer may display HTML source code when you attempt to launch SDM. To fix this problem, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Then scroll to the Security section, check Allow active content to run in files on my computer, and click Apply. Then relaunch SDM.

Click on the Cisco SDM icon on your desktop to launch the SDM demo version. Enter the loopback address 127.0.0.1 and click on the launch button to start the SDM demo application. Accept any security certificate notification messages that pop up.

I installed the new java software version. Java Platform, standard edition 6, version 6, update 6 (build 1.6.0_06-b02)

Now i have finally gotten up to the point of loading the page but have been stuck on loading for the past hour.
I can see the Cisco Router and Security Device Manager (SDM) page with the "Loading Cisco SDM, please wait" then below that "SDM for 127.0.0.1 will open in another window. Do not close this windows until you exit SDM".
I closed my firewall, disabled my antivirus and am not sure what to try next. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Unhappy SDM Demo is not running...

Hello everyone,

I'm sitting for the 640-802 in a few weeks and I'm having problems running the SDM Demo. I followed all the instructions in the Study Guide but when I enter the loopback address, it tells me that the IP address is not valid because it's not connected to anything (I'm not typing this on my own computer else I'd have put in the the exact error message). I'm guessing SDM is something that we'll be tested on otherwise it wouldn't be in there but I'm at my wits' end! Help me please.

On a brighter note, 3 cheers for Mr Lammle on such a well-written, informative, sometimes humourous, always comprehensible book!

Study and take your test, then come back and learn SDM.
Cheers!

Default SDM problem

Hello,
I am preparing for the CCNA 640-802 exam with Mr. Lammle's Sybex 6th edition book and the Sybex CCNA Virtual Lab Titanium edition.

I am on the SDM portion of Chapter 4 and cannot get the SDM demo to run. I do not have a router so I am following the Hands-on Lab 4.6 directions on page 241 to run the SDM demo on my PC. I have followed all of the instructions listed but it's still not working.

I enter the loopback address 127.0.0.1, click the Launch button and I receive the following error message:

"Unable to launch SDM due to one or more of the following reasons:

(1) The IP address or hostname you provided is not a valid router address or is not reachable.

(2) HTTP/HTTPS is disabled on the router. If you are running HTTP or HTTPS on a custom port, specify the port number along with the device IP address or hostname (e.g. 10.10.10.1:<port number>).

After you fix these problems, try again."

I have disabled my pop-up blockers, disabled firewalls, enabled Active Content to Run in Files on My Computer, installed latest Sun JRE package, installed .net Framework 2.0, but it's still not working.

I'm guessing that knowledge of SDM will be tested for on the 640-802 exam otherwise it would not be emphasized in the chapter 4 text and on the Hands-on Lab 4.6.

Getting the demo to work would be great, so if anyone has a solution I would greatly appreciate it!

Lastly, if familiarizing myself with the GUI based SDM demo is not critical to passing the SDM portion of the exam, then will memorizing the CLI configuration on pages 225 & 226 be enough to pass the SDM portion of the 802-640 exam?

Thank you

Did you ever find a resolution?

I get similar errors in java console *after* opening SDM via launcher.html in the Program Files\Cisco Systems\Cisco SDM\common\common folder.

I can't run the SDM from the icon on the desktop at all
(C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\Cisco SDM\SDMLauncher.exe), so that's why I use the launcher in common folder.

Even so, I get errors in the java console (upon successful startup from the common\launcher.html file)... all the errors are related to null pointers because the loader can't find certain files in the c:\routerlessdemo folder, which is created the first time you run SDM.

Thank you for this! I was getting the same HTTPS errors and this worked perfectly!

Hi Brian,
I did not find a resolution to the SDM demo issue. After reading some posts on this forum by other members and Todd, I have gotten the impression that the best thing to do for the composite exam preparation is to focus on the CLI configuration.

It would definitely be great to get the SDM demo to work on my PC, but since there is SO much material to cover for the 640-802 exam I am working around it for now.

I'll definitely post a resolution if I go back to it and get it to work!

Thanks for the message and best of luck!
