By 'bi-directional communication', do you mean using two links instead of one?
If so, no you don't need static routes as routing protocols can handle load balancing. Each link should be in it's own subnet (/30) if you're using point-to-point connections. Bi-directional communication means a device can both send and receive on the same link. I assume you don't mean this as this is the normal condition.
